How do I care for a heat pump system?

Changing the filter, keeping the outdoor unit clear of shrubs/dirt and cleaning the condensation line.

Note: Caring for your heat pump system is part of Regular Homeowner Maintenance.

  1. Follow the instructions in the owner's manual for the correct filter type and change regularly.
  2. Airflow for a heat pump is crucial. Dirty air filters can easily DOUBLE the utility consumption of your system. Make sure that the unit has a filter at all times.
  3. Keep shrubs, grass clippings and dirt away from the outdoor unit.
  4. Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar followed by 1/2 cup of water down your primary condensation drain line each month. This will help keep your condensate line clear of algae and normal buildup.

Regular Professional Maintenance

Tip: Have a qualified heat pump technician perform an annual maintenance checkup on your heat pump.

Proper professional maintenance will keep your heat pump running efficiently for many years.
