What is a backflow preventer device?

Backflow preventer devices protect water supplies from contamination due to backflow when there is not sufficient space for an air gap

Backflow is when the flow of water reverses, which can cause water to become contaminated.

An air gap is the simplest way to prevent backflow. It is just an open vertical space between any valve, faucet or device that connects to your plumbing system and also where water can collect or pool.

The minimum air gap distance is specified by municipal plumbing codes.

Note: Your home may have a backflow preventer device for your irrigation system, if so, it is a brass device located on the side of your home, typically the side with the water meter.

This is an example of a backflow preventer device:

If you have a backflow preventer, you'll need to winterize your irrigation and reverse it in the Spring.
