Why is there steam coming from the microwave if it vents to the exterior?

Some over the range microwaves have a secondary vent on the front along the top edge that will automatically vent steam if you do not turn on the primary vent

The built-in microwave vent located below the microwave (when mounted above your cooktop) has two functions:

  1. Help reduce steam build up while cooking on the stove top by pulling the steam through the vent to the exterior
  2. To remove the steam from the interior of the microwave

In order for the primary venting system to function, you'll need to press the "Vent Fan" button on the control panel to turn on the vent (even when using the microwave), otherwise, the secondary vent will continue to vent as needed.

Important: Turning on the vent fan when using the microwave will prevent steam from building up on the cabinet above the microwave. Failure to use the vents properly can cause the cabinet to become damaged by the steam.
